Another year over and you are approaching 50 or you are already in your 50’s and beyond and the voice inside your head said, “I don’t know where the time has gone?” This is a new chapter in your life and when you look in the mirror you notice how your body is changing. Before you start complaining about your age, remind yourself that you still have your breath you are alive and so many people younger than you are no longer able to experience life on this beautiful planet. It’s time to congratulate yourself for reaching this magical stage of your life, now that you notice where you are and where you want to go you can start organising the next 10 years of your life, your story has not ended, you are just beginning. This blog post is for you if you say “YES!” to life you are lucky to have come this far and now is the time to celebrate your journey and move forward to achieve all your dreams. This blog post will show you 10 ways to look and feel fabulous over 50, however you can use these tips to help you feel fabulous at any age!
At the age of 50 we are just getting started! As you start a new decade believe that it can be the best time of your life. Age is just a number and don’t allow anyone else to convince you that you are “over the hill.” You are starting another decade, a beautiful new chapter in your life.
Here are my top 10 tips to looking and feeling fabulous at 50 and beyond:
- Make sleep a priority: Everyone knows that if you don’t sleep well it will start to show on your face, your eyes will not be bright and dark circles will form under your eyes and your skin can lose its colour or appear pale and your overall appearance can look tired. Make sure you get enough sleep every night and this can vary depending on your body. For example, I don’t need more than 6 hours sleep a night but I have realised that’s just the way my body works and as long as I get my 6 hours sleep I look and feel great. Some people don’t need the recommended 7-8 hours sleep a night, listen to your body and do what feels right for you. Establish a routine and go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time every day. My other blog post on How meditation can help you get better sleep has more information.
- Healthy diet: It’s important to maintain a healthy diet as we get older to help support a healthy mind and body. Dieting and diet pills can cause more problems to the body in the long term and some diet pills can have side effects. Include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet and key nutrients such as vitamin B12 to help prevent anemia, calcium to maintain strong bones, vitamin D to aid absorption of calcium and protein to preserve muscle mass and to balance hormone regulation. Some examples of where these key nutrients can be found: Vitamin B12 can be found in meat, fish, cheese, bananas and fortified foods. Calcium can be found in dairy, salmon, tofu, almonds. Vitamin D can be found in mushrooms, eggs, oily fish, soy milk. I love these plant powered products for overall wellbeing; try Healthy life pack
- Keep hydrated: Drink as much water as needed as it is necessary to replenish bodily functions, help with keeping the joints lubricated and delivering oxygen throughout the body.
- Exercise: No matter what your age you are still capable of exercising your body and there is no excuse not to go for a walk around the block or park your car 15 minutes from the supermarket so you can walk the rest of the way. It doesn’t matter what type of exercise you do as long as you enjoy it and you can feel it working for your mind and body. Gentle yoga postures are popular as they can help circulation improving blood flow and increasing oxygen to the cells for the body to function better.
- Healthy skin & makeup: Invest in a natural skin care range of your choice. Take care of your skin and make sure to cleanse, moisturise and exfoliate your skin. Find a moisturiser that you like and will help your skin to stay hydrated during the day and reduce fine lines. Have regular facials either at home or at a salon will help maintain a youthful skin. French women are known for their effortless style and keeping their makeup simple and neutral during the day. If you want to emulate this simple style, you don’t need a lot of products to achieve a polished look. Choose a light liquid foundation close to your skin tone and you can mix your foundation with warmer tones to add warmth to your face. Apply some concealer, mascara, rosy blusher for your cheeks, lip gloss and you are ready to win the day.
- Manicure and pedicure: Nails can lose shape and shine as we get older; moisturise your cuticles, shape, file and try neutral colours for your manicure and pedicure. Your hands are usually on display during the day so require regular maintenance to keep them looking healthy and beautiful.
- Hairstyle: Look after your hair and find a natural shampoo and conditioner. Regular shampoos can contain a lot of chemicals and can dry the hair instead of adding moisture. Check the labels for sulfate free shampoo and moisturise your hair after shampoo or add a leave in conditioner before drying. Embrace the change and get a great signature haircut. If you are not yet ready to accept your grey hair, you can add some highlights for a more natural look.
- Wear Sunscreen: Wearing sunscreen helps to protect your skin from the sun to prevent dark spots, wrinkles and keep it looking younger.
- Classic wardrobe essentials: Invest in your wardrobe, you don’t have to follow the fashion trends and buy expensive clothes with designer labels. Know what works for your body and choose quality over quantity, classical timeless pieces that will last and you can mix and match with other clothes in your wardrobe. Try to buy the best quality clothes you can afford and natural fibres like cotton, wool, silk and linen last longer and are good for your skin and health. Don’t be afraid to experiment with colour but if in doubt you can’t go wrong with neutral colours. Choose shoes that are comfortable if you need to walk to your destination, there is a time and a place for heels and we don’t have to suffer painful feet for fashion. Create a look that is timeless and elegant and wear subtle pieces of jewellery as oversized earrings and chunky bracelets don’t match a classical suit. If you want to make a statement, focus on one piece of jewellery to complete your outfit. Remember that you don’t have to be a model to look beautiful, it’s about confidence that radiates from within, your emotions on the inside will show on the outside. Buy clothes that make you feel comfortable and if you feel good you won’t care about other people’s opinions. My other blog post on How to develop a classy and elegant style has more information.
- Love yourself: Getting older is accepting who we are and where we are going in our lives, it is about embracing change and our imperfections as we have learned to take risks and experiment with our own style. We have grown to love ourselves and negative comments and opinions from others about our style don’t count. Loving yourself as you get older is the greatest gift that you can give yourself, it is the secret to looking and feeling fabulous.
